Australia Proposed Cap on International Students
Dec 17, 2024
Australia will introduce a cap on international student intakes starting from 2024 in an attempt to create a more sustainable, regulated, and controlled international education system. In this way, it will put a cap on the number of new international students who can commence their studies in Australia every year. It is proposed in the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Bill 2024 and is supposed to begin taking effect by January 2025.
Such a move will provide several key motivations. These include the recent increased number of applications for student visas while dealing with housing shortages, the increasing cost of living, and perceptions regarding poor quality education. Critics, however, argue that such a measure may deter or discourage more prospective students, as Australia would mainly be looking at those from such large countries like India, which constitutes the majority of international students.
Note that exemptions under the cap may apply to students undertaking certain transnational education programs or who receive specific government scholarships. Yet, the nature and implications of the cap are still in debate as stakeholders call for clearer definitions and more consultation This policy change, if finalized, will likely impact where international students, especially from India, would prefer to study. It may push the students towards alternative destinations like European or Asian countries with more open policies.
